A GREAT PET

The Great Pyrenees which is also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a capable and imposing guardian, devoted to its family members. The Great Pyrenees is somewhat wary of strangers whether human or canine. This breed is often used to guard livestock and is known for its herding capabilities. The Great Pyrenees is courageous, very loyal and obedient to family members even if self-sacrifice is required. Adult males normally grow to 110-120 pounds and stand 27 to 32 inches tall, while females reach between 80-90 pounds and stand 25 to 29 inches tall. Normally, Great Pyrenees live between 10 to 12 years. Their coats are white and can have varying shades of gray, red or tan around the face. As they mature, their coat hair grows very thick and long. Shedding of the hair does present a problem which requires constant brushing.

This breed can be very gentle with children if raised with them at an early age. Socialization is important if not being used as a working flock guards. They have an independent nature and will tend to dominate a less secure owner becoming stubborn and teritorial. The key to training this breed is to be firm but calm and consistitent with rules set by the owner. Proper training is most important due to their independent nature.

The Great Pyrenees character and temperment are of utmost importance. They are confident, gentle and affectionate. While territorial and protective of his flock or family when necessary, his general demeanor is one of quiet compsure, both patient and tolerant. He is Strong Willed, independent and somewhat reserved, yet attentive, fearless and loyal to his family.
